Medical Lab TechnologistWhat Responsibilities Will I Have as a Medical Lab Technologist?Your main responsibilities would be to test, and detect, signs of disease, malnutrition, parasites, or other abnormalities. You would be testing body fluids like blood, sputum, faeces, tissue, and urine. You may also be required to type blood samples for transfusion, or you could detect drug levels in blood to calculate efficacy of treatment. Physicians will generally send a sample asking for a specific test or tests. What is An Average Day for a Medical Lab Technologist? Medical Lab Technologists will receive samples from hospital wards, or local consulting rooms. The samples need to be accurately logged, and labeled with the patient's identification, the physician in charge of the case and the required test or tests. Many of the tests can be carried out automatically, which involves loading machinery with samples. Some tests require visual work. You may prepare slides and look at blood samples under a microscope in order to assess blood counts of specific types of blood cell or parasite. These results are then logged, checked, reported, and returned to the requestor. What is the Job Market Like for a Medical Lab Technologist and How Can Education Help Me? Medical Lab Technologists generally require a bachelors majoring in medical technology for this role. Technicians may need less training such as an associates or certification. The job outlook is expected to be excellent since new tests are constantly being produced, and more of these tests are being carried out. This combined with an aging population means that prospects should be very good indeed.
